I Am Being Audited
Tax authorities usually rely on the taxpayer filing a tax return to determine how much tax liability is the result of the taxable income of the taxpayer. An audit requires that the taxpayer present evidence of the amounts that are claimed in the tax return. The taxpayer is required to prove the amount of income received as well as that amounts claimed as deductions are proper and that evidence exists as required by law.
Organization normally will result in a better result and minimizing any taxes, penalties, and interest that are due. Poor records will often result in additional income being determined to exist and deductions being disallowed.
Frequently there are disagreements between the taxpayer and the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers have rights. These rights may result in a lower tax. These rights must be claimed or they are lost. Taxpayers have the right to an appeal and even have the right to sue the Internal Revenue Service in the United States Tax Court, The United States District Court, or the United State Court of Claims. Taxpayers can even appeal further all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
