I OWE PROPERTY TAXES
The claims of taxing authorities for as valorem taxes or commonly called property taxes may be assessed against the property you own. The taxes are either for the ownership of real estate or the ownership or use of personal property. The failure to pay the tax will result in penalties and interest being charged by the taxing government. If the taxes are not paid attorney fees will be added even if there is no lawsuit filed.
The claim of the local governments for property tax is the first debt paid if the property is sold. The taxes are paid before the mortgage on the property or Internal Revenue Service tax liens.
Owing property tax can result in a lawsuit filed by the local government’s attorneys. If you lose the lawsuit the government will normally sell your property at auction. This auction may leave you owing for a great deal of the mortgage.
Many people fail to claim the homestead exemption they are allowed. The failure to claim the exemption will result in your tax being substantially higher. This will also result in penalties, interest, and penalties being based on the incorrect amount. Taxpayers lose their right to claim the property tax exemption as time passes.
Payment plans are sometimes allowed to repay property taxes.
